Medical Billing Certification

Medical claims billing is a complicated business. Although the federal government doesn’t require certification to work in medical billing, professionals looking to stay on top of the industry are increasingly seeking specialized education and certification opportunities. Some medical billing and coding certification options to consider:

1. Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) Designation. The Certifying Board of the American Billing Association (AMBA) offers the CMRS designation to all members wishing to demonstrate their commitment to providing the highest standards possible in claims management and medical billing. To receive the designation members must receive at least an 85% score on the over 700 questions on the CMRS exam covering 16 different sections from medical terminology to compliance.
2. Certified Medical Claims Professional (CMCP) Designation. The CMCP designation is granted by the American Career Certification Board (ACCB), a non-profit organization that seeks to define standards for the entry-level professional. The CMCP is a new designation intended as a way for medical billers without job experience to be able to demonstrate their formal knowledge of the medical claims billing process.
3. Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Designation. Another option available to medical billers looking to take their career to the next level is to become a Certified Professional Coder (CPC). A CPC must pass a coding certification examination sponsored by the American Academy of Professional Coders. The examination consists of questions regarding the correct application of CPT®, HCPCS procedure and supply codes and ICD-9-CM diagnosis codes used for billing professional medical services to insurance companies. A CPC must have at least two years coding experience and maintain yearly renewal and CEU requirements.
